Exuberant color, vigorous brush
work and a jubilant outlook are all characteristics of Lau Chun's highly
distinctive oil paintings.
Born in Kiangsi, China, in 1942, Lau demonstrated a precocious interest
in art at the age of 10. After graduating from High School, he entered the
Canton School of Fine Arts to receive a solid foundation in the
fundamentals of art.
In 1962, living in Hong Kong, Lau Chun was hired by Frances Bobo, a
noted Mexican artist, to paint murals and mosaics. Later a grant from a
Swiss company, Revox corporation, led to recognition in Europe. Attracted
by the light and color of the Islands , the artist, in 1971, settled in
Hawaii .
While Lau Chun has been inspired by the French Impressionists he has
developed a distinctive style that redefines the tenants of classic
Impressionism. The uniquely textured paint surface, up close abstract, at
a distance perfectly captures the spirit of his subjects. The impression
of light and energy is rendered with such confidence and vivacity that it
is destined to place this artist in the front rank of
American-impressionist painters.
Lau Chun is that rare colorist in whose best work one may see the
poetic qualities through a technique at once delicate, bold, and assured.
His paintings have the power to bring those seeing them that instantaneous
quickening and enhancement of life that is the chief function of true art.
